For 5 years, our son Dennis practiced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with SBG East Coast, a mixed martial arts gym in Wareham, Mass. My brother in law partnered with Stephen Whittier to bring the education and instruction to kids of all ages as well as adults to the Southeastern Coast region of Massachusetts. As a parent observing these classes weekly, I was so impressed with the outfit not only for the martial art itself, but for the dedication of the coaches and staff manning the desk and the mats. It always amazed me that they all knew every child’s name and acknowledged them when entering the school. A trait I wish that I was as good. And for sure, the gratitude I have for the teachers of lessons and techniques my son learned from these people in the last five years. I see the benefits of his training with SBG in his daily routine…from his hand/eye coordination, self esteem, and discipline when it comes to his schoolwork and other projects. I will forever be grateful for the impact SBG made in our lives and for our son.
Among these coaches were also competitors. Before we left Massachusetts, I was excited to attend an event held at Tri-Force MMA, a venue that frequently holds regional and district events for both men and women. There were 12 fights on this night, and two involved athletes trained at SBG, by Stephen (black belt) and Jeff Perez, a ranking leader and fighter in the BJJ community. There are no words to describe the adrenaline felt running through my veins as I sat ringside watching and photographing these competitors.
